The challenge

A high spam score of the website was a concern as it was giving the website a negative reputation. Due to unwanted backlinks created in past, Spinny’s spam score was 10%. A strategy was required to reduce the spam score and toxic score of the website and indicate the bots that the website is of high quality.

What was Spinny looking for?

  • Reduce the spam score and toxic score
  • Eliminate the unnatural backlinks

The strategy

 Identified the spammy, unnatural links and toxic domains with a  backlink audit of the website from tools such as SEMRush, Moz, Ahref & others.

  • Once unnatural backlinks were identified, disavow file was created and submitted on Google search console. These files indicated Google to remove spammy links (or domains) that were linking to Spinny from other domains.


After uploading the disavow file, it was time to wait as Google it self has said that it may take anywhere from 3 to 9 months to consider the disavow links. We reinitiated the backlink audit and examined the above-selected toxic domains. We observed that the toxic domains which were disavowed are not present in the list.
