One of the fastest-growing social media platforms, Instagram, has gained success right from the beginning as it attracted over a million users within the first few months of its launch. The founders, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, initially created a prototype app called Burbun which allowed people to check-in to places from their user account. After gaining a lot of popularity, they focused completely on letting the app be a platform for people to showcase their photography skills. This attracted a wide range of users as it did not involve engaging in political debates and sharing long textual content but keeping it short with just photos, commenting and liking them. It instantly became the #1 photography app.

In the year 2019, the Facebook-owned app went through a range of updates that helped it to evolve, benefiting not just the users but also the brands/advertisers. Here is a list of the five biggest Instagram updates from the year 2019:

    • Revamping the Explore Tab

Various new explore tab changes have made the app more user-friendly and added to the engagement rate of various influencers. Apart from photos, the users get a variety of options to choose from, including IGTV videos, shopping tabs, etc. that are categorized based on the niches they prefer. The tab is divided into categories like Nature, Food, Decor, Travel, Style, etc. This gives creators and influencers a chance to be featured in the explore tab and get to their target audience.

    • Launch of the SHOP Page

The Instagram team launched a page dedicated to the owners of small businesses, featuring their inspiring success stories and giving them a shoutout. There is also a similar page called ‘CREATORS’ which gives tips and insights to creators and influencers for crafting better content and increasing engagement.

    • Check out on Instagram

This update provides an in-app shopping experience to Instagram users. Here, creators and brands can add links to product images to direct them to a ‘Check out on Instagram’ tab through which they can purchase the product. This is a convenient and engaging way of shopping online and is a great update for brands as well as influencers.

    • Instagram Threads

This feature enables the user to create more personalized content, giving them control over its viewership. Here, the user gets to create a list of close friends and limit their communication.

    • Create Mode Updates

The year 2019 has been noted as the peak of the influencer marketing era. As per research by the Digital Information World, the average costing on a sponsored photo has increased by 44 percent in the time between 2018 and 2019. As high user involvement and engagement with influencers’ content helps them gain an edge over the rest, the platform has introduced different types of creating modes for polls, quizzes, questions, customized gifs, etc. These modes help the brand and influencers understand which content strategies work for their target audience.

    1. Wow that’s an amazing write up which also gives an insight on the most recent updates. Helpful also for the new Instagram users.

    2. I believe that a social media consultant must be attuned to the company goals and aspirations if he or she is to represent them on their social media channels. I also think that outsourcing social media marketing is a good idea for a company looking to specialize in their core business. In any case, most businesses outsource marketing and advertising and I don’t see why social media marketing should be any different. You just need to be actively involved to ensure that you are represented in the way that you want
