Yes, you heard that right! Google is rolling out support for continuous scrolling in Google Search on mobile devices. Time to say goodbye to the “Read More” button.
Here’s the official announcement by Google:
“At Google, we’re always exploring new ways to help people find what they’re looking for quickly and easily. Earlier this year, we launched a redesign of the Search results page on mobile for a more modern experience that’s easier to scan and navigate. Today, we’re making browsing search results more seamless and intuitive with the introduction of continuous scrolling on mobile devices. Now, when you reach the bottom of a search results page on your phone, the next set of results will automatically load with relevant information.”
When you reach the bottom of the first page of results, the Google Search Engine will now load the next page for you, allowing you to keep scrolling until you discover a website you want to visit.
Google has started rolling out this Google Search re-design in the US and it is expected to make its way to other countries soon.
As with all other Google updates/features, the main focus is once again on the User Experience. Google says it wants its users to have a seamless experience when searching for queries on the SERP. It believes that the new design is intuitive for users and will foster curiosity in this information-rich era.
Here’s what Google stated:
“While you can often find what you’re looking for in the first few results, sometimes you want to keep looking. In fact, most people who want additional information tend to browse up to four pages of search results. With this update, people can now seamlessly do this, browsing through many different results, before needing to click the “See more” button.”
It’s worth noting that this isn’t the same as Infinite Scrolling. After the first four pages, visitors will see the traditional “Read More” button instead of the new Continuous Scroll functionality.
Only time will tell whether the new Continuous Scroll feature will help websites’ ranking on the second page (and lower) on the Google SERP. It will also be interesting to see how this change affects Impressions and Clicks in Google Search Console.
