Google recently shared more information on how their AI models like BERT and MUM are helping and will help Google Search provide people with personal crisis support information, making it less likely for unexpected explicit content or spam in our search results.
Pandu Nayak, Google Fellow and VP of search, shared a new blog that explains how Google Search uses MUM (Multitask Unified Model technology) and BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) to serve safer search results.
Key Highlights:
- Google will use the MUM model, which will be able to better detect search queries in crisis.
- Improvement in Google’s BERT to better understand when a searcher looks for explicit content.
- BERT has reduced the unexpected, shocking results for searchers by 30% in the past year.
Nayak wrote, “People in personal crises search in all kinds of ways, and it’s not always obvious to us that they’re in need. And if we can’t accurately recognize that, we can’t code our systems to show the most helpful search results”.

Nayak also mentioned that the MUM has the capability to understand the intent when a person is in need. He also added, “more reliably show trustworthy and actionable information at the right time.” Google plans to roll out these improvements in the coming weeks.
