When browsing the web, encountering the ‘ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS’ message can be exasperating. This error typically occurs when a website gets stuck in an endless loop of redirections, leaving users unable to access the desired content. Let’s explore its causes and possible solutions.

ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS Error: What Is the Cause?

The ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECT occurs when the browser can’t establish a connection between the initial page and the destination page in a redirect. In other words, this happens when a browser is stuck in a loop of redirects when trying to load your webpage.

The main causes for these errors can be due to the following:

      • Browser cache & cookies issues: If cookies are corrupted and the cache is outdated, a redirect loop may occur, resulting in the ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS error.
      • Wrongly Configured Redirects: Too many redirect errors can occur if your new redirects get conflict with your current ones.
      • Wrong  HTTPS settings: This refers to a situation where the configuration of a website’s HTTPS (secure) protocol is not properly set up. This may lead to a loop of redirects between HTTP and HTTPS versions of the same page.
      • Issues with third-party services: The website may rely on third-party services such as analytics programs, plugins, or other external sources. These problems can cause a chain of redirects that makes the website inaccessible.

Clear Your Browser Cache And Cookies

There can be some cases where the error might not be from your website but from your browser. This may happen when your browser contains corrupted cookies because of which this error can be triggered.

Try deleting your browser’s cache and cookies:

    Google Chrome

    1. In the top-right corner, click on the three dots and then select “Settings”.
    2. Click on “Privacy and security” then select “Clear browsing history”.
    3. Select “cache and cookies.”
    4. Choose a time frame and Then Click on “Clear data.”

    1. In the top-right corner, click on the menu button and then select “Settings”
    2. Select “Privacy and Security” and Click on “Clear Data” from the “Cookies and Site Data” section.
    3. Click on “Clear Data”.

    Clear the WordPress cache:

    1. Log in to your WordPress dashboard and Navigate to Plugins from the left-hand menu. Click on “Plugins.”
    2. Find the Cache Plugin and select the plugin.
    3. Clear Cache: Within the plugin settings, there should be an option to clear or purge the cache. Click on it to clear the cached data.
    4. Confirm: Some plugins might ask for confirmation before clearing the cache. Confirm the action.

Ensure that your SSL Certificate is installed correctly

When a website has an SSL certificate installed, you’ll typically see “https://” instead of “http://” in the website’s URL, and a padlock icon appears in the browser’s address bar. Your website may experience this error if you improperly install an SSL certificate or if you force HTTPS on it without first installing it.

Check your SSL certificate is installed properly or not by using an SSL Checker Tool.

    Check for third-party services

Third-party services refer to external tools, applications, or resources integrated into a website but not directly managed by the website itself. After clearing the cache and cookies if you still see too many redirect errors you may review third-party services.

Proxy servers and Flexible SSL options with HTTPS and HTTP requests may be responsible for redirect errors

    Reset your .htaccess file

    1. Access your website’s root directory using FTP or a file manager.
    2. Locate the .htaccess file and rename it (e.g., .htaccess_backup).
    3. Refresh your website; it will run without the .htaccess rules.
    4. Create a new .htaccess file with default settings if the issue is resolved.
    5. If not, consult your web hosting support for assistance. Always backup files before making changes.

    Check Your URL Settings

Wrong URL settings can cause ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS errors on your website. Locate your “WordPress Address (URL)” and “Site Address (URL); check both the URLs Matches.

Also, Check for spaces at the beginning or end of the URLs.

ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECT is Sometimes tricky to track down. However, some of the steps described above will assist you in fixing too many redirect errors. If these steps are not enough to resolve the issue, contact your host manager.
