    Is Wix Good for SEO?

Ranking on top of the search engines ranking is possible with Search Engine Optimization or SEO. This is possible if a proper SEO strategy has been in place. The more you optimize your strategy, the better search engines will index your website.

One such method would be to use a free website builder like Wix. Wix has almost every feature required to create a website and manage your SEO campaign. It is an excellent tool, especially for small website owners who prefer ease over having complete control of their websites.

As a free tool, is Wix good for SEO?  Here’s what Google’s senior search analyst, John Mueller had to say:

“Wix is fine for SEO. A few years back, it was pretty bad in terms of SEO, but they’ve made fantastic progress and are now a fine platform for businesses. The reputation from back then lingers on, but don’t be swayed by it.

What they’ve done in recent years is really good stuff, including making it trivial to have a really fast site (as you see in the Lighthouse scores — admittedly, speed is only a tiny part of SEO).”

Pros and Cons of Wix SEO

Here is the list of advantages of using the Wix platform:

    • Optimization of site infrastructure: Wix can help with the basic SEO setup and provides a solid foundation to your SEO strategy. It includes building customizable URLs and service-side rendering. Wix also builds and maintains your XML sitemap and optimizes your site images instantly for faster page loading.
    • Control of your SEO settings: Wix allows you to control your SEO settings, like modifying default meta tags, structured data markup, URL structure, slugs, etc.
    • Integrated with Google: Wix allows you to connect with Google Search Console and Google Analytics easily. Using the platform can help avoid the hassle of manual verification and track your site’s performance on search.
    • Customized structured data markup: Wix structured data markups are in tune with Google’s rich results recommendations which helps your pages automatically appear in rich results. Further, you can add markups on similar pages simultaneously and create your markups using the platform.

Wix website builder has its downsides too. When it comes to analytics, the platform provides basic traffic tracking and analytics. However, Wix doesn’t provide analytics at a deeper level. It doesn’t allow you to switch templates once you go live. You need to take your entire site down and start again. Moreover, unlike in a self-hosted site, editing your sitemap is impossible with Wix.

    Wix SEO Setup Checklist

If you want to optimize your website and align it with SEO best practices, Wix has developed an SEO Setup Checklist called Wix SEO Wiz. You can find this free tool in your Wix account’s dashboard. Here’s how you can use this SEO Setup Checklist.

    •  Start with answering some basic questions about your business, website, keywords, etc.
    • Provide relevant information about your business.

With this information you will get a customized Wix SEO Optimization plan to get you started. You can optimize your site content through a step-by-step guide. This will also help with ranking on search engines like Google and Bing. You can also use the Wix site inspection tool to discover any issues with your website.

The Wix SEO Setup checklist can kickstart your Wix SEO optimization journey, especially if you are a beginner.

    Use Long-Tail Keywords

Keywords serve as a path for potential customers to find you. Using long-tail keywords in your content can shorten this path. And let your prospects find you quickly. Increased voice search has led to a rise in the use of long-tail keywords.

These keywords usually comprise three to five words. The clearer and specific they are in search intent, it makes them less competitive over short keywords. They are an excellent way to reach your audience who are prepared to buy the relevant product or service.

For example, long tail keywords such as “best organic coffee shops near me” or “best website builder for beginners” are good examples when users are specific about their needs and intent.

The key behind using long-tail keywords is quality over quantity. Using them can help attract quality audiences and increase your conversion rates.

    Choose the Right Domain

A domain name is a crucial aspect of SEO. It makes your business stand out from others. With Wix, you can easily get a domain name and attach it to your site.

You will need to make sure you select the right domain. This is how your prospects will discover and remember you. The first thing you should remember while choosing a domain name is to make it short and simple. This can garner more attention and clicks.

Include your business name and relevant expertise so that people understand better what your business is all about. You can also add keywords in your domain name that reflect your brand. But this has no ranking benefit, according to Google.

    Create Original Titles and Descriptions

Creating original titles and meta descriptions for each page and section of your website is integral to SEO. Each metadata should be original. Similar metadata may give the impression that your site is using duplicate content.

This may get search engines confused and redirect them to the wrong page. With Wix SEO, you can customize your metadata and optimize each page of your site so that search engines easily distinguish them.

    Optimize for Mobile

According to reports, 56% of purchases were done through mobile devices.  This figure shows that your website should be optimized to be used on mobile phones.

Wix Editor automatically creates a mobile-friendly version of your website using your desktop site’s content. The layout can be changed by moving the components to different locations. You can also use the layout optimization tool to make the best use of your site for smaller screens.

    Submit a Sitemap

A sitemap is a map of your website. It contains information about the various pages, videos, and other elements. A sitemap is used by search engines like Google to find, crawl and index your site content. How can you submit your sitemap?

Search engines have a webmaster tool and a method to submit sitemaps. You can check the process of the search engine you wish to submit your sitemap. But before submitting your sitemap to a search engine, verify your site’s domain ownership.

Another simple way of submitting your sitemap is via Wix. When your site is connected to Google Search Console via Wix SEO Wiz, your sitemap is automatically submitted to Google. In addition, when you make changes to your website, your sitemap is also updated with those changes so that you don’t have to submit it again.

    Use Local SEO

To stay relevant to local customers, you will need to use local SEO. This should include optimizing your Google Business Profile, researching local keywords, creating locally relevant content, etc.

These steps will help you get discovered by users on Google Maps and improve your overall online visibility. Also, ensure your NAP (Name, Address, and Phone Number) citations are consistent on every platform.

This will help Google verify your business information is accurate and evaluate your trustworthiness. You can submit your information to as many relevant directories in your locality and industry to establish authority.

    Organize Your Website

Websites have to be organized. This helps search engines understand the hierarchy of your site pages before indexing them. With an unclear structure, search engines may not understand what your pages are about. When this happens, they won’t rank you.

You should focus on creating a good site structure for better user experience. A well-organized site makes it easier for users to understand and navigate through it. If you have a disorganized users will fail to understand what it is about and can’t find what they are looking for.

The frustrated visitors will leave your site at once, never to return. Hence, site structure can greatly impact user experience and is a deciding factor on how much time users spend on your site.

Wix SEO can help you optimize your site structure too. The Wix site templates have an intuitive menu that makes site navigation seamless. But make sure you add all the sections while customizing your menu so that users discover all your site content easily.

    Describe Your Pictures

Images play a prominent role on your website and contribute to SEO too. They make your site more appealing, help visitors better understand it, and enhance the overall user experience. However, while adding images to your content, it is essential to add alt texts. These descriptive texts are shown to the user if the image can’t be displayed for some reason.

Search engines understand your site images better with descriptive text. The more information you add to an image, it will be considered important by search engines. At Wix, you can effortlessly add alt texts for your site images.

    Create Informative Content

Your website content can either attract or push away your prospects. So, it is crucial to take your site content seriously if you want to build a long-term relationship with your customers. Content full of grammatical errors or plagiarism can greatly impact your rankings.

Original and fresh content with relevant information can boost your rankings and help in driving quality and long-term traffic. Wix has blogging functionality as a basic feature. All you need to do is pull out a keyboard and start creating a content piece on a particular topic. You can also add content to your site easily via the Wix editor.

    Acquire More Backlinks

Once you optimize your website with the right keywords, content, and structure, it is time to acquire backlinks. What are backlinks? These are links on other websites that lead to your site. Backlinking is one of the most effective aspects of SEO in demonstrating your site’s authority to search engines and users. The quality of your backlinks can determine your rankings in search queries and boost your site traffic. The more high-value backlinks you acquire, the higher you rank in SERPs. This is because the quality and quantity of your backlinks act as votes of confidence from other sites and help in establishing your authoritativeness.

Social media can help in catching user user attention and drive traffic to your site. Wix SEO optimization, your links become shareable on social media platforms like Facebook or Twitter. You can change the image shared on social media with your link from the editor.

    Continue to Improve Your SEO

SEO is a repetitive strategy. You will need to implement continuous efforts for optimization of your online business.

Millions of websites are targeting the same audience and promoting similar services or products online. This fact should leave no room for complacency. Moreover, search engines are constantly evolving and updating their algorithms. When these updates kick in, they can push all your SEO efforts down the drain. It is, therefore, crucial to stay alert and regularly update your SEO campaign.

You will need to evaluate what is working in your favor. This can be done by measuring the site’s performance. Metrics to consider to track your SEO performance should include site traffic, time spent by visitors, conversion rates, etc.

No matter which website builder or platform you are using, understanding the basics of SEO, such as content creation, link building, keyword research, local SEO, etc., is essential to stay on the right track.
